The Difference Between a Headshot and a Branding Session
And how to know which one you actually need.
I get this question a lot. Someone reaches out, says they need photos for their business, and then asks: “Do I need a headshot or a branding session?”
The honest answer is: it depends on what you are trying to do.
Both have value. Both serve a purpose. But they are not the same thing, and booking the wrong one can leave you with images that do not actually fit your needs.
Here is how I explain the difference.
The Short Version
If you just need to skim, here it is:
| Headshot | Branding Session |
|---|---|
| One main image | Multiple images |
| One look/outfit | Multiple looks/outfits |
| Single purpose (LinkedIn, website, etc.) | Multi-purpose (social, website, marketing, etc.) |
| 30-45 minutes | 1-2+ hours |
| Quick and efficient | More depth and variety |
| Shows who you are | Shows who you are and what you do |
That is the basic breakdown. Now let me explain what each one actually looks like.
What Is a Headshot?
A headshot is a single, professional portrait. Usually shoulders up or chest up. Clean background or simple environment. The goal is to show what you look like in the most polished, approachable way possible.
Headshots are what you use when someone needs to see your face and get a sense of who you are at a glance. Think LinkedIn profile, company website, email signature, speaker bio, conference badge.
A good headshot does one thing really well: it makes people feel like they can trust you before they have ever met you. That is it. One image, one job.
You need a headshot if:
- You are updating your LinkedIn profile
- Your company needs a new team photo
- You are speaking at a conference or event
- You just need one solid professional image
- You have a tight deadline and limited time

What Is a Branding Session?
A branding session is a full portrait experience designed to capture multiple sides of who you are and what you do. Instead of one image, you walk away with a library of content.
We shoot different looks, different angles, different moods. Some images might be headshot-style. Others might show you working, creating, interacting with your environment. The goal is to give you enough variety that you have images for your website, your social media, your marketing materials, your email headers, your proposals, and anything else that comes up.
A branding session tells a story. It shows not just what you look like, but what your work feels like. What your energy is. What it might be like to work with you.
You need a branding session if:
- You are building or refreshing your personal brand
- You need images for multiple platforms and uses
- You want content that lasts for months, not just one profile photo
- You are launching something new (business, website, offer)
- You want images that feel like you, not just look like you

A branding session gives you variety, depth, and a library of content to pull from.
The Real Difference
Here is the simplest way I can explain it:
A headshot shows who you are. A branding session shows who you are and what you do.
A headshot is a single frame. A branding session is a whole collection.
A headshot answers the question “what does this person look like?” A branding session answers the question “what would it be like to work with this person?”
Neither one is better. They just serve different purposes.
How to Know Which One You Need
Ask yourself a few questions:
1. What are you using the images for?
If the answer is “LinkedIn” or “my company’s team page,” a headshot is probably enough. If the answer is “my website, social media, marketing, and everything else,” you need a branding session.
2. How many images do you actually need?
If one good image will cover you for a while, go with a headshot. If you find yourself constantly needing new content or using the same photo everywhere because you do not have anything else, a branding session will give you options.
3. How often do you show up online?
If you rarely post on social media or update your website, a single headshot might be all you need. If you are active online and constantly need fresh visuals, a branding session is a better investment.
4. Are you building a personal brand?
If your business is tied to you personally (coaching, consulting, creative work, freelancing), a branding session will serve you better. If you work for a company and just need a professional photo for internal use, a headshot will do the job.
Can You Start With One and Expand Later?
Yes. This happens all the time.
Some clients book a headshot session because that is all they think they need. Then during the session, they realize they want more. The conversation flows, the momentum builds, and what started as a quick 30-minute session turns into something bigger.
I wrote about this recently with a session I did for Sara in DeQuincy. She came in needing headshots for a missionary campaign. She left with a full editorial set that covered her work as a musician, artist, band director, and more. We did not plan for that. It just happened because the session had room to grow.
That is one of the benefits of how I work. I do not lock you into a rigid shot list. If we finish your headshots and you want to keep going, we can. If you book a branding session and realize halfway through that you have everything you need, we can wrap up early.
The session adapts to what you actually need, not what we planned on paper.
What I Offer
I offer both types of sessions, starting at $250.
My Headshot and Branding packages range from a quick 30-minute session to a full half-day Identity Experience. If you want something with more creative edge, I also offer Lifestyle and Editorial sessions for musicians, artists, and anyone who wants something moodier.
Both use the same approach. I call it Conversational Photography. We talk, you relax, and I capture the real moments instead of forcing poses. It works whether we are shooting one headshot or a hundred branding images.
I am based in Lake Charles, Louisiana and work throughout Southwest Louisiana. All sessions are on-location, so I come to you.
If you are still not sure which type of session you need, reach out. Tell me what you are working on and I will help you figure out what makes the most sense.
